Applications

Processors in the U.S., Canada and Mexico are turning to Teijin Kasei America for Panlite® Polycarbonate and Multilon® PC/ABS for an ever increasing number of applications.

Teijin Chemical's Panlite® Polycarbonate provides exceptional transparency, impact strength, heat resistance, dimensional stability and electrical properties, making it ideally suited to a wide range of applications. Panlite® is also available in a wide variety of grades, such as glass and carbon reinforced, flame retardant and weather resistant, as well as others, providing adding functionality and suitability for added applications.

Panlite®'s high-purity optical grade is accepted worldwide as the material of choice in the production of CD, MO, MD and DVD optical discs. Items in everyday life, such as cell phones and laptop computers, as well as CD and DVD players, are just some of the products whose housings benefit from this remarkable material.

Teijin's Panlite® Polycarbonate also plays critical roles inside common office automation (OA) equipment such as in the optical chassis in the engine of a laser or multi-function printer. In high-speed color equipment, where parts traditionally have been aluminum die cast, a specially developed Panlite® grade emphasizing stiffness and dimensional stability has proven highly beneficial in making the equipment lighter, resulting in cost savings.

Automotive applications for Panlite® continue to increase, driven by Teijin Chemicals' extensive development work for this market. Today, Panlite® is being used in the manufacture of car door handles and headlamps, replacing glass, metal and other materials. Research is also currently underway for the use Polycarbonate in the car body.

Teijin Chemicals developed Multilon® PC/ABS polymer alloy to provide the performance characteristics of both Polycarbonate and ABS. Due to the increasing requirements for smaller and lighter products, Multilon® has become a key material for a wide variety of products in the electric appliances, precision machinery parts, office and home appliances and automotive markets.

Typical markets and applications for Teijin Chemicals' Polycarbonate and PC alloys include:
  • Optical - Optical lenses and optical discs including CD, CD-ROM, CD-R, MO, MD, DVD
  • Automotive - Headlamp lenses, inner lenses, clusters, door handles, finishing panels, radiator grilles, hubcaps, spoilers
  • Electric and Electronic Parts - Switching relays, connectors, sensor parts, deflecting yokes, disc carriers, LCD parts, backlit panel parts
  • Household Applications - Electrical outlets, irons, microwave ranges, coffee makers, electric shavers, hairdryers, decorative light fixtures
  • Medical - Medical equipment parts
  • Safety - Safety goggles, helmets, smoke detectors, revolving lights, etc.
  • Precision Parts - Camera parts, watch parts
  • Office Automation Equipment - Lap-top personal computer housings, PDA housings, CD-ROM drive parts, laser printer chassis, OA equipment housings, digital camera housings
  • Machinery - Electric tools, vending machine parts, fiber bobbins
  • Communications - Mobile phone housings and pager parts
This is, however, only a partial list and new applications for Panlite® and Multilon® continue to be developed.
